Le DTM atteindra son point d’ébullition dimanche. Liam Lawson, Kelvin van der Linde et Maximilian Götz décideront entre eux de la lutte pour le titre tant convoité lors de la dernière course de la saison du DTM Norisring powered by BWT. Maximilian Götz, originaire d’Uffenheim en Allemagne, a remporté la course de samedi et a rendu la lutte à trois pour le titre encore plus excitante avec sa deuxième victoire de la saison. Liam Lawson a ramené sa Ferrari Red Bull en troisième position derrière le surprenant pilote indien Arjun Maini avec la Mercedes GetSpeed. Kelvin van der Linde a franchi la ligne d’arrivée en quatrième position avec l’Audi ABT.
Par conséquent, le Néo-Zélandais Liam Lawson, 19 ans, est en bonne position pour devenir le plus jeune champion DTM de l’histoire dimanche. Avec 224 points, le « Kiwi » de l’équipe Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse a les meilleures chances de décider la bataille pour le titre de pilote DTM 2021 en sa faveur. L’intelligent Néo-Zélandais compte désormais 18 points d’avance sur van der Linde, son principal rival, et 19 sur Götz. Dimanche, il y a encore un maximum de 28 points en jeu, trois pour la pole position et 25 pour la dernière victoire de course de la saison. Le double champion DTM, quant à lui, a quitté la course au titre, et ce sur son propre circuit. Avec la BMW Walkenhorst, il a terminé douzième, ne marquant aucun point.
La finale de dimanche sera décisive. La course commence à 13h30 et sera diffusée en direct sur SAT.1 à partir de 13h et dans plus de 60 pays dans le monde. Le DTM est également diffusé en direct en Nouvelle-Zélande, le pays d’origine de Lawson, le favori du titre.
« Gagner ici est un rêve. C’est certainement ma victoire la plus importante, juste géniale », a déclaré un Maximilian Götz plein d’entrain après l’arrivée. « J’ai même pleuré pendant le tour de refroidissement. En qualification, je n’ai pas tout à fait réussi, nous étions un peu en retard au départ. Mais comme toujours, cela a montré que tout est possible au Norisring. La bataille pour le titre n’est pas encore terminée. »
La joie était écrasante pour Arjun Maini, deuxième, qui compte d’innombrables fans, notamment dans son pays d’origine. « Au cours des derniers week-ends, notre vitesse s’est améliorée et ici, au Norisring, cela s’est traduit par un résultat tangible. Au début, je craignais d’avoir une crevaison, mais heureusement, ce n’était pas le cas. J’ai été un peu surpris lorsque l’Audi s’est soudainement levée », rapporte le Néo-Zélandais. « Ensuite, il y a eu un léger contact avec Philip Ellis, mais je ne pouvais pas simplement disparaître dans les airs. J’ai été surpris qu’il fasse un tête-à-queue car le contact était vraiment léger. Mon équipe m’a dit tour après tour de rester calme et de ne pas prendre de risques. C’est bien que le titre des équipes ait déjà été décidé. C’est une belle récompense pour mon équipe. Pour dimanche, je reste cool. Je pense que je vais pouvoir dormir. Nous verrons comment les choses se passent dimanche ».
Avec sa troisième pole position, Lawson s’est mis dans la meilleure situation possible pour la 15e course de la saison. Le décor était donc planté pour une bataille acharnée entre Lawson et Kelvin van der Linde, puisque le Sud-Africain s’est assuré la deuxième place sur la grille, également en première ligne.
Cependant, le premier virage est à nouveau à la hauteur de sa réputation. Avant que Lawson ne puisse tourner dans l’épingle, van der Linde passe à l’intérieur, ayant apparemment manqué son point de freinage. Ensuite, Lawson a été récupéré par Maini. Philip Ellis a trouvé la meilleure façon de sortir de la tourmente et a pris la tête de Lawson et du compatriote de ce dernier, Nick Cassidy, qui court sur la Ferrari AlphaTauri à la place d’Alex Albon (THA) ce week-end. Derrière eux, Götz attend déjà sa chance, rattrapant une place après l’autre pour finalement prendre la tête. Tout au long de la course, Götz était en route pour la victoire de manière dominante, même si d’autres pilotes étaient temporairement en tête en raison des arrêts aux stands obligatoires. L’un d’entre eux, en tête pendant un long moment, était Cassidy, qui s’est livré à un duel passionnant avec van der Linde pendant de nombreux tours.
Avec la troisième place de Lawson et la cinquième place de Cassidy, l’équipe Red Bull AlphaTauri AF Corse s’est assurée d’une victoire précoce dans le classement des équipes DTM. Liam Lawson, Kelvin van der Linde and Maximilian Götz will be deciding the battle for the coveted title between them in the final race of the season in DTM Norisring powered by BWT. Maximilian Götz from Uffenheim in Germany was victorious in the race on Saturday and made the three-way battle for the title even more exciting with his second win of the season. Liam Lawson brought his Red Bull Ferrari home in third place behind the surprisingly strong Indian driver Arjun Maini with the GetSpeed Mercedes. “Winning here is a dream. This certainly is my most important win, just great,” a buoyant Maximilian Götz said after the finish. “I was even crying on the cool-down lap. In qualifying, I didn’t quite get it right, we were a little bit late going out. But as ever so often, it has shown that everything is possible at Norisring. The battle for the title isn’t over yet.”
Overwhelming was the joy for second-placed Arjun Maini, who has countless fans in his home country in particular. “In the past weekends, our speed has become better and better and here at Norisring, this has been converted into a tangible result. In this race, the pit stop was a decisive factor,” the GetSpeed Mercedes driver said. “I am incredibly happy with this success. I got some damage on the right front suspension in the turmoil after the start. I already thought that my race was over. Being on the podium now is unbelievable.”
Points’ leader Liam Lawson also had a terrifying moment. “In the turmoil after the start, I was right in the middle of the action. Initially, I feared that I had a puncture, but thankfully, I hadn’t. I was a bit surprised when the Audi suddenly came up,” the New Zealander reported. “Then there ws some slight contact with Philip Ellis, but I couldn’t just disappear in the air. I was surprised that he spun as the contact was really slight. My team told me lap after lap to keep calm and not to take any risks. Nice that the teams’ title has already been decided. That is a great reward for my crew. For Sunday, I am still cool. I think that I will be able to sleep. Let’s see how things play out on Sunday.”
With his third pole position, Lawson got himself into the best possible situation for the 15th race of the season. Thus, the stage was set for a tough battle between Lawson and Kelvin van der Linde, as the South African secured himself second place on the grid, also on the front row. However, the first corner again lived up to its reputation. Before Lawson was able to turn into the hairpin, van der Linde shot past on the inside, apparently having missed his braking point. Then, Lawson was collected by Maini. Philip Ellis found the best way out of the turmoil and took the lead from Lawson and the latter’s compatriot Nick Cassidy, who is racing the AlphaTauri Ferrari instead of Alex Albon (THA) this weekend. Behind them, Götz was already biding his chance, making up one place after another and eventually taking the lead. Throughout the distance, Götz was on course for victory in a commanding way, even though other drivers were temporarily in the lead due to the mandatory pit stops. One of them, leading for a long time, was Cassidy, who staged a thrilling duel with van der Linde over many laps.
