Vervisch devance Björk pour une seconde victoire en 2021
Frédéric Vervisch devient le premier pilote à s’imposer deux fois cette saison en FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup après avoir remporté la Course 1 de la WTCR Race of France au Circuit Pau-Arnos.
Le pilote belge s’est élancé de la pole sur la grille partiellement inversée au volant de sa RS 3 LMS de l’équipe Comtoyou Team Audi Sport et a mené de bout en bout avant de s’imposer devant la Lynk & Co Cyan Performance de Thed Björk.
Au départ, Björk a pris un bon départ, mais Vervisch a contenu l’attaque du Suédois pour entrer en tête dans la chicane rapide des virages 1 et 2, mais des problèmes survenaient derrière dans le peloton. Tiago Monteiro était touché par le leader du championnat Yann Ehrlacher, après le départ moyen de ce dernier. La Honda Civic Type R TCR ALL-INKL.DE Münnich Motorsport sortait de la piste et tapait durement le rail de sécurité au virage 3.
La voiture de sécurité Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition sortait alors en piste, tandis qu’Yvan Muller, auteur de la pole position de la course 2, devait rentrer au stand en raison de dégâts. “Nous avons pris un mauvais départ et puis il y a eu le problème avec Tiago”, a déclaré Muller. “Quelqu’un m’a percuté sur la droite et j’ai des dégâts sur l’essieu droit. Si quelqu’un peut le réparer avant la course 2, c’est mon équipe.” Muller reprenait la piste peu avant la fin de la course pour tester la voiture finalement réparée en vue de la Course 2.
La course reprenait au septième tour et Vervisch creusait immédiatement l’ écart sur Björk, et s’assurait ainsi une victoire convaincante. “C’était un peu serré au départ”, a déclaré Vervisch. “Björk a pris un meilleur départ que nous et le contact était très léger, mais la clé était de rester en tête au départ. J’ai eu un méga restart après la voiture de sécurité et je suis très heureux. Merci à l’équipe, ils le méritent car nous avons eu des moments difficiles cette saison.”
Tout n’a pas été simple dans sa victoire. “C’est une piste très difficile”, a-t-il déclaré. “Tout le monde souffre au niveau mécanique, c’est dur pour la voiture. Je suis heureux de terminer sans gros problèmes.”
Derrière Björk, Gabriele Tarquini termine troisième – également sa position au départ -, sur sa Hyundai Elantra N TCR de l’équipe BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse, tandis que le prétendant au titre WTCR Esteban Guerrieri terminait quatrième après être parti de la cinquième place sur la grille de départ sur sa Honda Civic Type R TCR ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport. Son coéquipier Néstor Girolami passait la ligne au cinquième rang.
Norbert Michlisz a cédé la sixième place à Jean-Karl Vernay, son coéquipier chez Hyundai, pour aider le Français dans sa quête du titre WTCR. Ehrlacher n’a pu que terminer huitième de la grille de départ après ses problèmes au premier tour. “C’était un départ difficile pour nous”, a-t-il déclaré. “Nous avons eu un petit problème au départ qui nous a fait pénalisé et j’ai perdu deux positions”.
Ce résultat signifie que Guerrieri a réduit l’écart en tête du classement de 25 à 20 points, avec Vernay en troisième position, 30 unités derrière Ehrlacher.
Luca Engstler a terminé en neuvième position sur sa Hyundai, et Tom Coronel complète le top 10 sur son Audi. Les autres pilotes ayant marqué des points sont Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) en 11e position, Attila Tassi (Honda), Mikel Azcona (Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición), Gilles Magnus (Audi) et Santiago Urrutia, qui avait été pénalisé de cinq places sur la grille de départ pour avoir gêné Coronel en qualification.
Les CUPRA de Jordi Gene et de Rob Huff ont toutes deux été contraintes à l’abandon en raison de problèmes pendant la course, le Britannique occupant la neuvième position.
Race Two
Vernay bat Muller pour une victoire à domicile
Jean-Karl Vernay s’est remis en selle dans la course au titre FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup en remportant la seconde manche de la WTCR Race of France après avoir battu le poleman Yvan Muller.
Le pilote Français a pris le dessus sur son compatriote au départ et a géré au mieux le restart après une période de safety-car en fin de course pour s’imposer à domicile au volant de son Elantra N TCR Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team équipée de Goodyear.
Vernay a pris l’avantage sur Muller dès l’extinction des feux et, après avoir pris la tête en se plaçant à l’intérieur au premier virage, n’allait plus être rejoint avant l’arrivée. “C’était la clé, nous l’avons dit hier”, a déclaré le vainqueur ravi, qui a remporté sa deuxième victoire de la saison. “J’ai pris un bien meilleur départ qu’Yvan. Je voulais vraiment cette victoire. Hier, j’étais déçu de ne pas avoir signé la pole position après la Q3. Mais, après le départ, il s’agissait juste de gérer les pneus en cas de voiture de sécurité, laquelle est arrivée par surprise pour le dernier tour.”
Derrière les deux premiers, il y avait beaucoup d’action sur le circuit de Pau-Arnos, car la WTCR Race of France a flambé dans la seconde moitié de la course. Norbert Michelisz était en troisième position, mais il a commencé à avoir du mal à suivre le rythme. “J’ai des vibrations”, a-t-il signalé sur sa radio.
Santiago Urrutia a commencé à mettre la pression sur Michelisz, le doublant après quelques tours et recevant un avertissement des commissaires. Pendant ce temps, le groupe de voiture suivant se concentrait, le vainqueur de la course 1 Frédéric Vervisch profitant de l’occasion pour dépasser Esteban Guerrieri au 17ème tour. Les deux hommes sont entrés en contact et Guerrieri a perdu deux places dans ce tour, se retrouvant ainsi derrière son rival pour le titre WTCR et leader du championnat, Yann Ehrlacher.
Au tour suivant, Michelisz a finalement perdu sa bataille pour le podium, Urrutia et Vervisch dépassant tous deux le Hongrois. Ce dernier se retrouvait ensuite sous la pression d’Ehrlacher. Le Français était bouchonné par la Hyundai, ce qui permettait à Guerrieri de tenter de reprendre son bien perdu au 19e tour.
La bataille s’intensifiait à la chicane arrière, Guerrieri se portant l’intérieur, touchant une pilote de pneus qui était bougée de son emplacement. Dans la foulée, le pilote Honda et son rival sur Lynk & Co entraient en contact, Ehrlacher étant contraint de couper tout droit afin d’éviter la seconde pilote de pneus, les positions demeurant finalement inchangées. Après ce moment chaud, Michelisz pointait toujours au 5e rang devant les deux hommes, mais la pile de pneus déplacée contraignait la direction de course à sortir la voiture de sécurité Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition, qui entrait en piste lors de ce qui aurait dû constituer le dernier tour. Deux autres boucles étaient alors ajoutées au total de la course pour assurer une arrivée sous drapeau vert.
La course reprenait ainsi au 22e passage pour un seul tour sous haute pression, Vernay gardant son sang-froid pour devancer Muller sur la ligne d’arrivée. Urrutia venait ensuite en troisième position pour compléter le podium, Vervisch ajoutant de son côté une quatrième place à sa victoire dans la Course 1. Mais Michelisz, en difficulté lors de ces derniers instants de l’épreuve, ne pouvait finalement contenir Ehrlacher, qui lui arrachait la cinquième place sur la ligne d’arrivée pour quelques centièmes de seconde, alors que Guerrieri concluait à la septième place.
Grâce à ce résultat, le King of WTCR Ehrlacher devance désormais Vernay, qui grimpe à la deuxième place du classement, à 16 points du Goodyear #FollowTheLeader [leader du championnat]. Guerrieri descend lui à la troisième place, à 22 points d’Ehrlacher et Vervisch, qui occupe la quatrième place du championnat- ce qui signifie que quatre marques de course de clients occupent les quatre premières places à deux meetings et quatre courses de la fin.
Gabriele Tarquini a terminé huitième sur sa Hyundai, Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) et Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) complètent le top 10. Néstor Girolami a lui manqué de chance. L’Argentin était sixième au début de la course jusqu’à ce qu’il signale un problème de pneu et glisse dans la hiérarchie, choisissant finalement de rentrer aux stands.

Race 1
VERVISCH BEATS BJORK FOR SECOND 2021 VICTORY
Frédéric Vervisch became the first two-time winner in the 2021 FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup after winning Race 1 at WTCR Race of France.
The Goodyear-equipped Belgian started from the partially reversed grid pole position in his Comtoyou Team Audi Sport RS 3 LMS and led all the way to beat Thed Börk’s Cyan Performance Lynk & Co to victory as four customer racing brands filled the top four places at Circuit Pau-Arnos.
At the start Björk made a good getaway but Vervisch hung on to lead into the fast Turn 1 and 2 chicane, but there was trouble further back in the pack. Tiago Monteiro was tagged by a slow starting Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher, the ALL-INKL.DE Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR crashing out into the barriers at Turn 3.
That led to an intervention from the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition Safety Car, while Race 2 pole position starter Yvan Muller pitted with damage. “We did a bad start and then there was the mess with Tiago,” said Muller. “Somebody hit me on the right and I have damage to the right axle. If anyone can fix it before Race 2 it is my team.” Muller returned to the circuit before the end of the race to test the repaired car in preparation for Race 2.
The racing action resumed on lap seven and Vervisch immediately built a gap to Björk to secure a convincing victory. “It was a bit tight at the start,” said Vervisch. “Björk got a better start than us and contact was very light, but the key was to stay in front at the start. I had a mega restart after the safety car and I’m very happy. Thanks to the team, they deserve this because we’ve had a hard time this season.”
Not everything was straightforward about his win. “This is a very hard track,” he said. “Everyone is suffering from mechanical challenges, it’s hard on the car. I’m happy to finish without any big problems.”
Behind Björk Gabriele Tarquini started and finished third in his BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse Elantra N TCR, with WTCR title contender Esteban Guerrieri fourth from fifth on the grid in his ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR. His team-mate Néstor Girolami was fifth.
Norbert Michlisz gave up sixth place to fellow Hyundai driver Jean-Karl Vernay to help the Frenchman’s WTCR title bid. Ehrlacher could only finish eighth from sixth on the grid after his troubles on the first lap. “It was a difficult start for us,” he said. “We had a small issue at the start which made us bog down and I lost two positions.”
The result means Guerrieri has closed the gap at the top of the standings from 25 back to 20 points, with Vernay in third, 30 behind Ehrlacher.
Luca Engstler finished ninth in his Hyundai, with Tom Coronel rounding out the top 10 in his Audi and winning the WTCR Trophy. The other points finishers were Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) in P11, Attila Tassi (Honda), Mikel Azcona (Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición), Gilles Magnus (Audi) and Santiago Urrutia, who had been docked five places on the grid for impeding Coronel in qualifying.
The CUPRAs of Jordi Gene and Rob Huff both pitted with trouble during the race, the Briton while running in ninth position.
Race 2
VERNAY BEATS MULLER FOR HOME WIN
Jean-Karl Vernay reignited his FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup title hopes by beating WTCR Race of France pole position starter Yvan Muller to win Race 2.
The Frenchman got the better of his countryman at the start and brushed off the threat of a late safety car intervention to win on home soil in his Goodyear-equipped Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team Elantra N TCR.
Vernay got the drop on Muller from the lights and with the inside line into Turn 1 swept into a lead he wouldn’t lose. “That was the key, we said it yesterday,” said the delighted winner, who claimed his second victory of the season. “I did a much better job than Yvan. I really wanted this one. Yesterday I was annoyed after Q3 not to have pole position. But after the start it was just a case of managing the tyres in case of a safety car which arrived with a surprise for the last lap.”
Behind the top two, there was plenty of action at Circuit Pau-Arnos as WTCR Race of France burst into excitement in the second half of the race. Norbert Michelisz was running third, but started to struggle to pace. “I have a vibration,” he reported on his radio.
Santiago Urrutia began to pile on pressure, tagging Michelisz on successive laps and receiving a stewards’ warning. Meanwhile, the following pack concertinaed, Race 1 winner Frédéric Vervisch taking a chance to demote Esteban Guerrieri on lap 17. The pair made contact and Guerrieri lost two places on the lap – most crucially slipping behind WTCR title rival and Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher.
The following lap Michelisz finally lost his battle to cling on to a podium finish, both Urrutia and Vervisch passing the Hungarian. Now he came under pressure from Ehrlacher. The Frenchman was frustrated to be held up by the Hyundai and it allowed Guerrieri to attempt to make up for what he’d lost on lap 19.
The battle came to a head at the back chicane, Guerrieri making a move up the inside and nudging a tyre stack out of position. The pair collided and the Lynk & Co was forced to cut the second tyre stack. After all the drama the order was Michelisz still in fifth from Ehrlacher and Guerrieri – but the displaced tyre stack led to the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition Safety Car heading out for what should have been the last lap. Two more were added to the race total to ensure the race could finish under green flag conditions.
Racing resumed on lap 22 for what was a single-lap shootout, a disgruntled Vernay keeping his cool to head Muller to the line. Urrutia followed in third to complete the podium with Vervisch adding a fourth place to his Race 1 win. But a struggling Michelisz couldn’t hold back Ehrlacher who grabbed fifth place on the run to the finish, with Guerrieri back in seventh.
The result means King of WTCR Ehrlacher heads Vernay who has jumped up to second in the table, 16 points behind the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader. Guerrieri has dropped to third, 22 points down on Ehrlacher with Vervisch up to fourth – meaning four customer racing brands fill the top four places with two meetings and four races to go.
Gabriele Tarquini finished eighth in his Hyundai, with Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) and Nathanaël Berthon (Audi) completing the top 10. The other points scorers were Luca Engstler in P11, Tiago Monteiro – whose Honda returned to the fray after his crash in Race 1 – Tom Coronel (Audi), Mikel Azcona (CUPRA) and Rob Huff (CUPRA).
Néstor Girolami was out of luck. He was running sixth in the early stages until he reported a tyre problem and slipped down the order, eventually choosing to pit.
