Girolami déchroche sa première victoire de la saison devant Guerrieri
Néstor Girolami a devancé Esteban Guerrieri pour un doublé ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport, décrochant du même coup son premier succès de l’année lors de la Course 1 de la WTCR Race of Czech Republic lors d’une première manche du FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup pleine d’action sur l’Autodrom Most.
Girolami, neuvième vainqueur en neuf courses WTCR cette saison, s’est élancé de la deuxième place sur la grille partiellement inversée, a évité le grabuge dans le virage 1 au départ et a ensuite mené toute la course, tandis que la Honda Civic Type R TCR sœur de Guerreri a tenu tête à Yann Ehrlacher, le pilote Goodyear #FollowTheLeader, tout au long des 15 tours de la course pour prendre la deuxième place.
Girolami a dépassé Petr Fulín, parti en pole position sur la grille de départ inversée, dès l’extinction des feux, le pilote Wildcard ayant signalé des problèmes d’embrayage avant le départ. Puis, au premier virage, Norbert Michelisz a heurté l’arrière de la Lynk & Co d’Yvan Muller, ce qui a fait partir en tête-à-queue Nathanaël Berthon, cinquième. Le héros local Fulín se retrouvait lui aussi pris dans la bousculade, sa CUPRA Leon Competición rejoignant la Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport de Berthon dans le bac à gravier. Cela a déclenché une interruption derrière la Safety Car.
La course a repris au quatrième tour et Girolami, qui avait également été percuté dans le virage 1 après le départ, prenait le large en tête. Son coéquipier Guerrieri effectuait lui un bon dans la hiérarchie depuis la neuvième place sur la grille, prenant l’intérieur au virage 1 et a lui aussi évité le chaos – se hissant directement à la deuxième place. Le pilote argentin s’est ensuite bien défendu, maintenant Ehrlacher – troisième depuis la septième place sur la grille – à distance tout au long d’une course tendue.
“C’était dur”, a déclaré un Girolami ravi. “Je savais que le virage 1 allait être compliqué. J’ai été touché mais j’ai pu me maintenir devant. Je tiens à remercier l’équipe, Honda et les sponsors. Maintenant, dans la course 2, nous avons une bonne chance de remporter plus de points.”
Derrière Guerrieri, Ehrlacher était heureux de monter sur le podium pour consolider son avantage en tête du classement WTCR. “Des points vraiment précieux, c’est plus que bon à prendre”, a-t-il déclaré.
Ehrlacher a devancé son oncle Muller, qui a pris l’échappatoire au virage 1 après son contact avec Michelisz, mais qui s’est bien repris pour terminer quatrième, Thed Björk, sur une autre Lynk & Co, l’ayant laissé passer au cinquième tour. Derrière le trio de Cyan Lynk & Co 03 TCR, Jean-Karl Vernay complète le top 6 sur son Elantra N TCR du Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team.
Michelisz a terminé en septième position devant Mikel Azcona, qui s’élancera de la pole position pour la course 2. Le coéquipier de l’Espagnol chez Zengő Motorsport, Rob Huff, est passé de la 12e place sur la grille de départ à la neuvième place, dépassant Tom Coronel à la sortie du virage 2 dans l’avant-dernier tour. Le Néerlandais a terminé 10e sur son Audi Sport RS 3 LMS de l’équipe Comtoyou DHL.
Les autres pilotes ayant marqué des points lors de cette première manche sont Gabriele Tarquini (Hyundai) 11e1, Santiago Urrutia (Lynk & Co), Luca Engstler (Hyundai), Frédéric Vervisch (Audi) et Bence Boldizs (CUPRA).
Race 2
Dix sur dix avec la victoire de Michelisz devant Azcona
Norbert Michelisz est devenu le 10e vainqueur différent en 10 courses dans le championnat FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup 2021, le Hongrois ayant battu le poleman Mikel Azcona dans la Course 2 de la WTCR Race of Czech Republic à l’issue d’une manche interrompue par le drapeau rouge sur l’Autodrom Most.
Michelisz, pilote de l’équipe BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse, a pris la tête après qu’Azcona ait été ralenti par gros travers à la sortie du virage 1, permettant au Hongrois de prendre l’avantage au virage 2. Pendant ce temps, le chaos s’est installé derrière eux.
Comme dans la course 1, le peloton s’est regroupé au premier virage alors que les pilotes sautaient sur les freins. Après de multiples contacts, Gabriele Tarquini, Santiago Urrutia – deuxième au classement WTCR avant la course – Rob Huff et Attila Tassi sont tous sortis de la piste, trois des quatre voitures demeurant coincées dans les bacs à graviers. La course a été arrêtée pour permettre aux voitures endommagées d’être récupérées en toute sécurité.
La course a redémarré derrière la voiture de sécurité Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition. Michelisz prenait à nouveau les devants au départ, suivi de près par Azcona qui lui a mis la pression durant toute l’épreuve sur sa CUPRA Leon Competición de l’équipe Zengő Motorsport. Mais Michelisz, sur sa Hyundai Elantra N TCR a pu contenir la pression de l’Espagnol pour remporter la victoire.
“Félicitations à Mikel car il ne m’a pas rendu la vie facile”, a déclaré Michelisz. “Après le départ, je savais que je devais attaquer fort et j’ai fait 15 tours de qualification, ce qui n’est pas facile sur ce circuit. Merci à l’équipe car la voiture fonctionnait très bien. C’est fantastique de retrouver les sensations de la victoire.”
Derrière les deux premiers, Esteban Guerrieri a pris le meilleur sur Yann Ehrlacher depuis la deuxième ligne au départ, le premier décrochant son deuxième podium du week-end sur sa Honda Civic Type R TCR ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport. L’Argentin a dû travailler dur pour aller chercher sa troisième place mais, avec sa quatrième place, Ehrlacher consolidait son avance en tant que leader du classement WTCR. Il devance désormais Guerrieri de 20 points.
Nathanaël Berthon a compensé son abandon au virage 1 de la course 1 en terminant cinquième pour le compte de l’équipe Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport, devant la Lynk & Co 03 TCR Cyan Racing d’Yvan Muller. Luca Engstler est septième sur son Elantra N TCR Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing. Les Audi de Frédéric Vervisch, Gilles Magnus et Tom Coronel complètent le top 10.
Le pilote wildcard Petr Fulín termine 11e sur sa CUPRA Leon Competición. Tiago Monteiro (Honda), Bence Boldizs (CUPRA), Jean-Karl Vernay (Hyundai) et Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) marquent également des points. Mais pour Vernay, la 14e place ne constitue assurément pas une bonne affaire, puisqu’il a perdu une sixième place potentielle à cause d’un drive-through, en raison du fait que sa voiture qui ne reposait pas sur ses roues au tableau des trois minutes avant le redémarrage.

IT’S CZECH MATE AS GIROLAMI LEADS GUERRIERI FOR FIRST WIN OF 2021
Néstor Girolami headed Esteban Guerrieri for an ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport 1-2 to score his first victory of the year in Race 1 at WTCR Race of Czech Republic as the FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup made an eventful debut at Autodrom Most.
Girolami, the ninth winner from nine WTCR races this season, started second on the partially reversed grid, survived trouble at Turn 1 and then lead all the way as Guerreri’s sister Honda Civic Type R TCR held off Goodyear #FollowTheLeader Yann Ehrlacher throughout the 15-lap race to claim second.
Girolami dragged past reverse-grid pole position starter Petr Fulín from the lights, the Wildcard entry having reported clutch problems before the start. Then at Turn 1 Norbert Michelisz nudged the rear of Yvan Muller’s Lynk & Co, which knocked fifth-placed starter Nathanaël Berthon into a spin. Local hero Fulín also found himself caught up in the concertina effect, his CUPRA Leon Competición joining Berthon’s Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport entry in the gravel trap. That triggered an interruption by the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition Safety Car.
Racing resumed on lap four as Girolami, who had also been knocked sideways at Turn 1 after the start, made a clean escape at the front. His team-mate Guerreri had made impressive gains from ninth on the grid, took an inside line at Turn 1 and avoided the trouble – and jumped straight up to second. He now put up a fine defence, keeping Ehrlacher – up to third from seventh on the grid – at bay throughout a tense race.
“That was tough,” said a delighted Girolami. “I knew Turn 1 was going to be complicated. I was hit and went flat out to recover from that. I want to thank the team, Honda and the sponsors. Now in Race 2 we have a good chance for more points.”
Behind Guerrieri, Ehrlacher was happy to score a podium to consolidate his advantage at the top of the WTCR standings. “Really valuable points, I’ll definitely take that,” he said.
Ehrlacher headed his uncle Muller, who took the escape road at Turn 1 after his contact and recovered well to finish fourth, fellow Lynk & Co driver Thed Björk letting him past on lap five. Behind the trio of Cyan Lynk & Co 03 TCRs, Jean-Karl Vernay completed the top six in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Team Elantra N TCR.
Michelisz finished seventh ahead of qualifying pacesetter and Race 2 pole position starter Mikel Azcona. The Spaniard’s Zengő Motorsport team-mate Rob Huff rose from P12 on the grid to finish ninth, passing Tom Coronel out of Turn 2 on the penultimate lap. The Dutchman finished P10 in his Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport RS 3 LMS.
The other points scorers were Gabriele Tarquini (Hyundai) in P11, Santiago Urrutia (Lynk & Co), Luca Engstler (Hyundai), Frédéric Vervisch (Audi) and Bence Boldizs (CUPRA).
Race 2
10 FROM 10 AS MICHELISZ BEATS AZCONA
Norbert Michelisz made it 10 winners from 10 races in the 2021 FIA WTCR – World Touring Car Cup as he beat pole position starter Mikel Azcona in Race 2 at WTCR Race of Czech Republic following a red flag interruption at Autodrom Most.
BRC Hyundai N LUKOIL Squadra Corse driver Michelisz took the lead after Azcona was slowed by a big slide as he exited Turn 1, allowing the Hungarian to gain the momentum out of Turn 2. Meanwhile, there was plenty of action behind them.
Just as in Race 1, the field concertinaed at the first corner as the drivers piled in hard on the brakes. After multiple contacts Gabriele Tarquini, Santiago Urrutia – second in the WTCR points coming into the race – Rob Huff and Attila Tassi were all out, with three of the four cars stuck in the gravel traps. The race was stopped to allow the damaged cars to be recovered safely.
The race restarted behind the Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition Safety Car. Michelisz made a strong restart and although Azcona chased him hard and exerted major pressure in his Zengő Motorsport CUPRA Leon Competición, the Hyundai Elantra N TCR just had enough to claim victory.
“Congrats to Mikel because he didn’t make my life easy,” said Michelisz, who victory was his first since Malaysia in 2019. “After the start I knew I had to go for it and I put in 15 qualifying laps which at this circuit is not easy. Thank you to the team because the car was working great. It is fantastic to win.”
Behind the top two, Esteban Guerrieri got the better of Yann Ehrlacher from the second row at the start, the former claiming his second podium finish of the weekend in his ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport Honda Civic Type R TCR. The Argentine was forced to work tirelessly or his third place as Ehrlacher chased hard, but fourth place allowed the Goodyear #FollowTheLeader to consolidate his advantage at the top of the WTCR points table. He now heads Guerrieri by 20 points.
Nathanaël Berthon made up for his Turn 1 retirement in Race 1 by finishing fifth in his Comtoyou DHL Team Audi Sport entry, ahead of Yvan Muller’s Cyan Racing Lynk & Co 03 TCR. Luca Engstler was seventh in his Engstler Hyundai N Liqui Moly Racing Elantra N TCR, with the Audis of Frédéric Vervisch, Gilles Magnus and Tom Coronel completing the top 10.
Wildcard entry Petr Fulín finished P11 in his CUPRA Leon Competición, with Tiago Monteiro (Honda), Bence Boldizs (CUPRA), Jean-Karl Vernay (Hyundai) and Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) also scoring points. But for Vernay, P14 was a poor return when he lost a potential sixth place to a drive-through penalty, incurred for his car not resting on its wheels at the three-minute board before the restart.
