par L’équipage n°8 de Toyota Gazoo Racing, composé de Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley et Kazuki Nakajima, a remporté la toute première victoire Hypercar aux TOTAL 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.
Buemi a conduit la toute nouvelle Toyota GR010-Hybrid jusqu’au drapeau à damier après une course mouvementée qui a vu le trio se battre après deux pénalités distinctes pour remporter une intrigante ouverture de la saison 2021 du FIA WEC.
Ils ont dû faire face à un défi de longue haleine de la part de la Toyota sœur de Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway et Jose-Maria Lopez et de l’Alpine A480-Gibson.
Les trois Hypercar ont mené pendant les six heures de course frénétique, mais c’est la n°8 qui s’est imposée après que la machine n°7 ait rencontré plusieurs problèmes.
Il s’agit notamment d’une sortie de piste, d’un contact avec la Porsche 911 RSR – 19 n° 91 et d’une brève interruption de la course sur la piste qui a forcé une réinitialisation des systèmes. Mais Kamui Kobayashi a tout de même réussi à décrocher la troisième place et à compléter le premier podium de l’Hypercar.
L’équipe Alpine Elf Matmut a réalisé une excellente course pour lutter contre les Toyota, André Negrao, Nicolas Lapierre et Matthieu Vaxiviere réalisant tous des relais solides pour un début de catégorie impressionnant pour l’équipe française.
United Autosports USA domine la catégorie LMP2
En LMP2, l’équipe United Autosports USA a remporté une victoire décisive grâce à l’association de Filipe Albuquerque, Phil Hanson et Fabio Scherer.
Les champions en titre ont donné un signal d’intention en dominant toutes les séances d’essais et de qualification avant la course, avant que Hanson et Albuquerque ne construisent une solide avance pour que la recrue du WEC consolide l’écart et remporte sa première victoire.
Le JOTA a pris la deuxième et la troisième place de la catégorie après que ses deux voitures aient grimpé furtivement dans le classement. Le trio n°28 composé de Sean Gelael, Tom Blomqvist et Stoffel Vandoorne semblait bien parti pour prendre la deuxième place, mais il a été contraint de prendre une pénalité en fin de course pour un contact avec l’Alpine Hypercar.
Cela a permis à la Jota Oreca-Gibson n°38 de Roberto Gonzalez, Antonio Felix da Costa et Anthony Davidson de s’emparer de la deuxième place dans les derniers instants de la course.
L’équipage de Racing Team Nederland composé de Giedo van der Garde, Frits Van Eeerd et Job Van Uitert a terminé quatrième et a également remporté le tout premier trophée LMP2 Pro/Am.
Les favoris locaux, Team WRT, étaient engagés dans la lutte pour le podium pour leurs débuts en WEC, mais ont été contraints à un long arrêt au stand après un problème d’embrayage dans la quatrième heure.

La Porsche n°92 remporte sa deuxième victoire consécutive à Spa
Les TOTAL 6 Heures de Spa Francorchamps, première manche du Championnat du Monde d’Endurance FIA 2021, ont été riches en action dans les catégories LMGTE Pro et Am.
Mais dans la catégorie LMGTE Pro, ce sont Kevin Estre et Neel Jani qui ont dominé en remportant la victoire de bout en bout au volant de la Porsche 911 – RSR n°92. C’est la deuxième victoire consécutive du Porsche GT Team à Spa et la cinquième victoire en WEC pour Estre. Pendant ce temps, Jani, de retour en WEC, a fait un retour de rêve en remportant sa cinquième victoire dans la série – la première du pilote suisse depuis Le Mans en 2016.
La Ferrari 488 GTE Evo AF Corse n°51 pilotée par Alessandro Pier Guidi et James Calado a terminé deuxième, à 35 secondes de la Porsche victorieuse de la catégorie. La Ferrari n°52, pilotée par Miguel Molina et Daniel Serra, est montée sur la dernière marche du podium.
Le Britannique Oliver Gavin a conclu une incroyable carrière de 30 ans de course par une quatrième place. Le légendaire pilote de voitures de sport et son coéquipier Antonio Garcia ont fourni un effort solide avec la Chevrolet Corvette C8.R pour ses débuts sur le sol européen.
Dans la dernière heure de la course, la Porsche 911 RSR – 19 n° 91 pilotée par Gimmi Bruni et Richard Lietz a perdu du temps après avoir percuté la Toyota n° 7 et crevé. L’équipe a également été pénalisée pour avoir dépassé les limites de la piste. Ils ont finalement terminé cinquième, à 20 secondes de la Corvette.
La Ferrari AF Corse triomphe en LMGTE Am
La catégorie LMGTE Am n’a jamais manqué de suspense, mais c’est la Ferrari 488 GTE Evo n°83 de l’AF Corse pilotée par François Perrodo, Nicklas Nielsen et le nouveau venu Alessio Rovera qui a franchi la ligne d’arrivée en premier.
Les champions en titre de la catégorie ont terminé 44 secondes devant l’Aston Martin Vantage TF Sport n°33 de Ben Keating, Dylan Pereira et Felipe Fraga. Le podium est complété par la formation italienne Cetilar Racing, dont la Ferrari a bénéficié d’un Full Course Yellow pour se hisser à la troisième place malgré un contact avec la voiture LMP2 Richard Mille n° 1 plus tôt dans la course.
La Dempsey-Proton n°88 semblait prête à compléter le podium pour assurer trois constructeurs différents dans les trois premières places, mais une pénalité en fin de course a mis la Porsche 911 RSR – 19 hors course, et le trio a finalement terminé cinquième. La quatrième place est revenue à la Ferrari AF Corse n°54.
Ni la n°46 ni la n°56 du Team Project 1 n’ont pris le départ de la course. Egidio Perfetti a percuté la barrière du Raidillon lors des qualifications d’hier, les dommages de la structure de la coque à l’arrière gauche de sa Porsche 911 RSR – 19 n’ont pu être réparés à temps.
La Porsche 911 RSR – 19 du GR Racing n’a pas pu non plus prendre le départ de la course d’aujourd’hui après que Michael Wainwright ait chuté pendant le tour de piste, endommageant la voiture n° 86 seulement 10 minutes avant le lever du drapeau vert.

Toyota makes history with first Hypercar victory at Spa
Toyota Gazoo Racing’s No. 8 crew of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Kazuki Nakajima took the first ever Hypercar victory at the TOTAL 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps today.
Buemi took the all-new Toyota GR010-Hybrid to the chequered flag after an eventful race which saw the trio fightback from two separate penalties to win an intriguing 2021 FIA WEC season opener.
They faced down a race-long challenge from both the sister Toyota of Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose-Maria Lopez and the Alpine A480-Gibson.
All three Hypercar entries led during the frantic six hour race but it was the No. 8 that came out on top when several issues were encountered by the No. 7 machine.
These included an off-track excursion, contact with the No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR – 19 and a brief on-track stoppage which forced a systems re-set. But Kamui Kobayashi was still able to claim third placed points and round-out the first ever Hypercar podium.
The Alpine Elf Matmut team ran an excellent race to fight the Toyotas throughout with Andre Negrao, Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxiviere all driving strong stints in an impressive category debut for the French squad.
United Autosports USA dominate LMP2 category
In LMP2 the United Autosports USA squad took a conclusive victory with Filipe Albuquerque, Phil Hanson and Fabio Scherer combining to vanquish their opposition.
The reigning champions gave a notice of intent by topping all of the practice and qualifying sessions ahead of the race, before Hanson and Albuquerque built a solid lead in order for WEC rookie to consolidate the gap and take a debut victory.
JOTA took an accomplished second and third in class after both of its cars stealthily climbed up the order. The No.28 trio of Sean Gelael, Tom Blomqvist and Stoffel Vandoorne looked set for an excellent runner-up position but were forced to take a late race penalty for contact with the Alpine Hypercar.
This allowed the No.38 Jota Oreca-Gibson of Roberto Gonzalez, Antonio Felix da Costa and Anthony Davidson through to grab second in the final moments of the race.
Racing Team Nederland’s line-up of Giedo van der Garde, Frits Van Eeerd and Job Van Uitert finished fourth and also took the first ever LMP2 Pro/Am trophy.
Local favourites Team WRT were engaged in the podium fight on their WEC debut but were forced in to a long pit-stop after a clutch issue in the fourth hour.
Porsche No. 92 takes second consecutive win at Spa
The TOTAL 6 Hours of Spa Francorchamps, round one of the 2021 FIA World Endurance Championship, saw plenty of action in the LMGTE Pro and Am categories.
However, in the LMGTE Pro category it was Kevin Estre and Neel Jani that dominated with a lights-to-flag victory in the No. 92 Porsche 911 – RSR. It marks the Porsche GT Team’s second consecutive win at Spa and Estre’s fifth WEC victory. Meanwhile, WEC returnee Jani made a dream comeback taking his fifth win in the series – the Swiss driver’s first since Le Mans in 2016.
The No. 51 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evo driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado finished second, 35 seconds adrift of the category-winning Porsche. The sister No. 52 Ferrari which was driven by Miguel Molina and Daniel Serra claimed the final podium spot.ritain’s Oliver Gavin signed off an incredible 30-year racing career with a fourth place finish – the legendary sportscar driver and team-mate Antonio Garcia putting in a solid effort with the Chevrolet Corvette C8.R on its debut on European soil.
In the race’s closing hour, the No. 91 Porsche 911 RSR – 19 which was driven by Gimmi Bruni and Richard Lietz lost time after it made impact with the No. 7 Toyota, incurring a puncture. The team were also penalised with a track limits drive-through penalty. They eventually finished fifth, 20 seconds adrift of the Corvette.
AF Corse Ferrari triumphs in LMGTE Am
The LMGTE Am category was never short of drama but it was the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari 488 GTE Evo driven by Francois Perrodo, Nicklas Nielsen and newcomer Alessio Rovera who eventually crossed the finish line first.
The reigning category champions finished 44 seconds clear of the No. 33 TF Sport Aston Martin Vantage shared by Ben Keating, Dylan Pereira and Felipe Fraga. Completing the podium was Italian outfit Cetilar Racing, the Ferrari benefiting from a Full Course Yellow to climb up to third despite contact with the No. 1 Richard Mille LMP2 car earlier in the race.
The No. 88 Dempsey-Proton looked set to complete the podium to ensure three different manufacturers in top three positions but a late penalty dropped the Porsche 911 RSR – 19 out of contention, with the trio eventually finishing fifth. Fourth place went to the No. 54 AF Corse Ferrari.
Neither the No. 46 nor the No. 56 Team Project 1 cars started today’s race. Egidio Perfetti hit the barrier at Raidillon during yesterday’s qualifying, the damage of the shell structure on the rear left of his Porsche 911 RSR – 19 unable to be repaired in time.
Also unable to start today’s race was the GR Racing Porsche 911 RSR – 19 after Michael Wainwright crashed during the outlap, incurring damage to the No. 86 car only 10 minutes before the green flag was dropped.
