La pénultième épreuve de l’ELMS se jouait sur le sol belge sur le Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
Qualifiée 10ème, l’Oreca #65 de Panis Racing a de nouveau brillé à l’arrivée en montant sur la 3ème marche du podium.
La cuvette de Spa n’a pas dérogé à sa réputation lors de la journée des test privés mercredi avec sa météo capricieuse amputant d’une grande partie la session de l’après-midi tant la piste était détrempée.
Les deux sessions d’essais libres du vendredi et samedi sont consacrées au travail de l’équipe et des pilotes en vue de la qualification et de la course (FP1 : P10 – FP2 : P6).
C’est James Allen qui est désigné pour qualifier l’Oreca #65 vendredi en début d’après-midi : l’Australien signe le 10ème temps après une session compliquée suite à la sortie du drapeau rouge dans le 1er tour.
Coutumier de l’exercice, Julien Canal prend le départ à la 10ème position des 4 heures de l’épreuve ardennaise à 11h ce dimanche sur un circuit ensoleillé. Le Français s’envole littéralement et se retrouve à la 4ème place à la sortie du 1er virage. Il concède ensuite une place à un concurrent avant que ne sorte le safety-car quelques secondes plus tard. S’enchainent ensuite une succession de full course yellow et safety-car. Après une heure de course, nouvel exploit de Julien Canal qui effectue un magnifique dépassement pour se retrouver à la 3ème place pendant plusieurs tours juste devant la voiture sœur d’Ultimate #29 aux mains de Jean-Baptiste Lahaye. Après un relai exemplaire, il transmet le volant à James Allen. L’Australien effectue ses tours avec application avec une bonne vitesse de pointe. A son retour en piste lors de son second pit-stop, il parvient à doubler Tristan Gommany (Duqueine Team) et se bat pour remonter sur le second, Manuel Maldonado (United Autosports). Malheureusement il se fait repasser par Gommandy à 1 heure de la fin de la course avant de rendre la voiture à Will Stevens. Le Britannique ne déroge pas à sa réputation et s’élance le couteau entre les dents bien décidé à ne pas terminer au pied du podium. Il s’en ensuit une énorme bagarre avec Job Van Uitert qu’il passe finalement avec maestria pour se retrouver à la 3ème place. Par la suite, avec les ingénieurs la pression est à son comble pour gérer sa consommation d’essence pour ne pas avoir à repasser par les stands et conserver sa place : opération brillamment réussie. Un dernier full course-yellow est présenté à 5 minutes de l’arrivée, l’Oreca #65 repart pour 2 tours et l’écurie signe de nouveau un podium à l’issue de ces 4 heures de Spa.

« De nouveau sur le podium après la victoire à Monza et la 3ème place au Mans : preuve est faite que l’écurie et les pilotes ont de nouveau confirmé notre niveau de performance.
Julien (Canal) a pris un départ incroyable avec une grande maitrise malgré le chaos autour de lui et par la suite il a enchainé les tours avec une vitesse bluffante : quelle fierté de l’avoir à nos côtés et le voir, malgré son expérience en endurance, progresser encore et encore. James (Allen) a également fait du bon travail en effectuant un relai solide sans faute et sans prise de risque inconsciente. Quant à Will (Stevens), il nous a encore montré qu’il était « le patron » en piste avec sa brillante démonstration lors de sa passe d’armes avec Uiter et sa gestion du fuel en symbiose avec les ingénieurs.
Nos mécanos ont, une fois de plus, réalisé des pit-stops de haut vol, nous faisant gagner à chaque arrêt de précieuses secondes. Notre réussite est le fruit d’un travail collectif avec l’équipe de Tech1 Racing managée par Sarah et Simon Abadie et nous sommes déterminés à tout mettre en place pour finir en beauté à Portimao ! Et un grand bravo à toute l’équipe de WRT pour leur titre 2021. «

« Nous sommes arrivés en vainqueur après la course de Monza mais ici à Spa, rien n’était joué. La séance d’essais sous la pluie du mercredi nous a privé d’un temps précieux pour la mise au point de nos réglages. Je suis parti 10ème sur cette piste mythique et je suis heureux d’avoir su éviter de justesse un crash impliquant plusieurs voitures juste devant moi. Par la suite, je me suis ensuite battu avec Memo Rojas plusieurs tours avant de le dépasser au freinage de la dernière chicane. Ramener la voiture en 3ème position en partant 10ème, c’était offrir une belle chance de podium final ! Je suis aussi très fier de mes co-équipiers James et Will qui ont livré de superbes batailles pour arracher ce podium. La stratégie a elle aussi été très bonne et les mécaniciens au top comme d’habitude. Bravo à toute l’équipe. Maintenant direction Portimao avec l’envie de gagner ! «
James Allen :
« Quelle journée, et voilà donc trois podiums d’affilée. Je ne pourrais pas être plus heureux pour l’équipe et tous leurs accomplissements cette saison. Julien a réalisé un départ phénoménal en évitant le drame du premier virage et en gardant un rythme régulier. Mon relais a été difficile, nous nous sommes battus pour revenir du milieu du peloton, mais je suis satisfait d’avoir passé le relais à Will en quatrième position. Will avait une tâche difficile à accomplir mais il a assuré comme d’habitude ! Ce n’est peut-être pas une victoire, mais c’est certainement une course dont on se souviendra et qui nous place en très bonne position pour nous battre pour la deuxième place du championnat lors de la dernière manche de l’European Le Mans Series. »
Will Stevens :
» Je suis vraiment heureux de repartir de Spa avec un nouveau podium, le troisième de suite, surtout en partant de la dixième place sur la grille. Julien a réalisé un excellent départ et nous savions qu’à partir de là, nous aurions le rythme pour nous battre pour un podium. Mon relais était assez « fun », j’ai eu de belles batailles tout en économisant beaucoup de carburant, ce qui rendait les choses difficiles, mais c’était bien d’obtenir la troisième marche du podium à la fin de mon relais.
Nous abordons Portimao avec confiance car c’est normalement l’un de nos meilleurs circuits de la saison. Merci à toute l’équipe pour leur travail acharné et c’est génial que les résultats se répètent régulièrement maintenant.
Félicitations à WRT pour leur victoire au championnat et maintenant pour nous la bataille est très serrée pour la 2ème place. »

The penultimate round of the ELMS held on Belgian soil around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit saw the #65 Panis Racing Oreca reaching the podium once again, with a third overall place.
The “chamber pot” reputation of Spa proved to be true during the private testing day on Wednesday with its capricious weather cutting out a large part of the afternoon session as the track was wet.
The two free practice sessions on Friday and Saturday were then devoted to the preparation of qualifying and the race (FP1: P10 – FP2: P6).
James Allen was on track to qualify the #65 Oreca on Friday afternoon: the Australian set the 10th fastest time after a complicated session following the red flag on the first lap.
As often, Julien Canal took the start, in 10th position here at Spa ahead of the 4 hours race. The sun was back for the race, and the Frenchman made a great start and found himself in 4th place at the exit of the 1st corner. He then conceded a place before the safety car came out a few seconds later. Then followed a succession of full course yellow and safety car. After an hour of racing, Julien Canal made another step forward up to the front with a magnificent overtaking to find himself in 3rd place for several laps just in front of the sister car of Ultimate # 29 in the hands of Jean-Baptiste Lahaye. After a great stint, he handed the wheel over to James Allen in 3rd place. The Australian showed a good speed through his stint. On his way back to the track after his second pitstop, he managed to pass Tristan Gommendy (Duqueine Team) and fought to get back close to the second, Manuel Maldonado (United Autosports). Unfortunately, he was passed by Gommendy before giving the car back to Will Stevens. The Briton, as he always does, superbly drove, determined to give his best. A huge fight ensued with Job Van Uitert. Thanks to an awesome maneuver, he gained the 3rd place. Then it was all about managing the fuel consumption not to have to go back to the pits. And thanks to engineers, he did it! After a final full course-yellow 5 minutes to the finish, the # 65 Oreca secured its podium finish once again.

“Again on the podium! After the victory at Monza and our 3rd place at Le Mans, the team and the drivers have once again confirmed their level of performance this year. Julien (Canal) did an incredible start despite a bit of chaos around him, and then he showed bluffing speed. We are so proud to have him with us and to see him, despite his experience in endurance, still making progress. James (Allen) also did a good job doing a solid and consistent stint. Will (Stevens) showed once again that he is « the boss » on the track with his brilliant demonstration during his pass over van Uiter and his fuel management till the end in close talk with the engineers.
Our mechanics once again made great pit stops. Our success is the result of collective work with the Tech1 Racing team managed by Sarah and Simon Abadie, and we are determined to put everything in place to finish in style in Portimao!
And congratulations to the WRT team for their 2021 title.”

» We came out victorious after the Monza race, but here at Spa all had to be done once again from zero. Due to rainy practice sessions on Wednesday, we lost precious time on track to fine-tune our set-ups. I started 10th on this legendary track, and I am happy to have avoided a crash involving several cars just in front of me. I then fought with Memo Rojas for several laps before passing him on the braking of the last chicane. Bringing the car back to 3rd position starting 10th was a good opportunity to reach the podium! I am also very proud of my teammates James and Will who fought hard to jump on this podium. The strategy was also very good, and the mechanics were on top as usual. Congratulations to the whole team. Now head to Portimao with the desire to win! »
James Allen :
» What a day, that’s three podiums in a row. I couldn’t be more happy for the team and all their accomplishments this season so far. Julien had a phenomenal start to stay out of all that drama on turn one and keep a steady pace. My stint was tough fighting our way back from the mid-field but very grateful to hand it over to will in P4. Will had some tough work to do and got the job done. It may not be a win, but it is definitely a race to remember and put us in a very good position to fight for second in the championship at the last European LeMans series round. «
Will Stevens :
« Really happy to come away with another podium for us, the 3rd in a row, especially coming from P10 on the grid. Julian made a great start and we knew from there on we would have the pace to fight for a podium. My stint was good fun, had some great battles whilst fuel saving a lot which made it tricky, but it was nice to get P3 during my stint. Congrats to WRT for the Championship win, and now the battle is super close for P2 so we head to Portimao with confidence as it’s normally one of our best tracks of the season. Thanks to all the team for their hard work, and it’s great the results are coming consistently to us now. »
