La marge pour la victoire n’était que de 1,1 seconde, mais ni Weerts ni Vanthoor n’ont eu à se battre pour la tête de la course pendant les 60 minutes de l’épreuve. En revanche, l’action derrière a été incessante du début à la fin, avec plusieurs batailles jusqu’au dernier tour.
Parti en pole, Weerts prend la tête au premier virage, tandis qu’Albert Costa (Lamborghini #163 Emil Frey Racing) passe devant Léo Roussel (Audi #25 Saintéloc Racing) pour s’emparer de la deuxième place. Plus loin derrière, Adrien de Leener est sorti de sa trajectoire et a été projeté en l’air par les bordures de trottoir, causant des dégâts qui ont mis fin à la course de la Porsche Dinamic Motorsport n°54.
Costa a été la menace la plus sérieuse pour WRT au cours des premières étapes, réalisant des tours rapides successifs pour se rapprocher de l’Audi n°32, mais il n’a pas été en mesure de faire une tentative sérieuse pour prendre la tête. Roussel a pris la troisième place, tandis que Luca Stolz (Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT n°6) s’est hissé à la quatrième place après une excellente échappée depuis la septième place sur la grille.
La course a été neutralisée pendant 10 minutes après que deux des principaux concurrents Pro-Am se soient retrouvés dans le gravier, éliminant ainsi Louis Machiels (Ferrari #52 AF Corse) et Valentin Pierburg (Mercedes-AMG #20 SPS Automotive Performance) de la lutte pour la victoire de classe.
Weerts a bien évalué le redémarrage et avait déjà quatre dixièmes d’avance sur Costa lorsque la course a repris. Le pilote Audi n’a pas eu à se défendre lors du premier tour sous drapeau vert, ce qui lui a permis de prendre de l’avance et de construire un avantage d’une seconde avant l’ouverture de la fenêtre des stands.
Il y a eu de l’action derrière lorsque Stolz a dépassé Roussel pour prendre la troisième place au virage 1, envoyant l’Audi de Saintéloc Racing hors de la ligne et offrant une opportunité à Jim Pla (Mercedes-AMG AKKA ASP n°87). Aurélien Panis avait une vue idéale de cette bataille depuis la sixième position et a pu en profiter pleinement, plongeant devant ses deux compatriotes français pour prendre la quatrième place.
Le défi de l’Emil Frey Racing pour la victoire s’est terminé dans les stands. La #163 a perdu du temps après que Norbert Siedler ait pris les commandes de Costa, perdant 14 secondes et faisant reculer la voiture au classement. L’équipe WRT a réagi rapidement et a remplacé Weerts par Vanthoor, qui a repris la piste avec une avance de huit secondes sur Maro Engel dans la Mercedes-AMG n°6.
Son avance a été anéantie par une deuxième voiture de sécurité, suite à une collision qui a laissé la Bentley #107 CMR et l’Aston Martin #188 Garage 59 échouées sur le gravier. Mais il était clair que Vanthoor avait le rythme pour gérer le redémarrage et tenir Engel à distance, ce qui signifie que l’attention était focalisée sur la bataille qui se déroulait derrière.
Christopher Haase a peut-être causé quelques secondes de tension dans le garage de Saintéloc Racing en contournant son coéquipier Frédéric Vervisch, mais les deux pilotes Audi Sport ont bien évalué leur bataille et la n°25 a devancé la n°26. Ben Barnicoat sur la McLaren #38 de JOTA, dépassant la Mercedes-AMG #87 de Konstantin Tereschenko pour la cinquième place, tandis que Raffaele Marciello (Mercedes-AMG AKKA ASP #88) a repris les commandes de Timur Boguslavskiy.
Vanthoor a complété le travail, prenant le drapeau à damier devant Engel et Haase, ce dernier assurant un premier podium de la saison 2021 pour Saintéloc Racing et un premier dans la série pour son équipier Roussel. Vervisch s’est classé quatrième sur l’Audi n°26 et a réalisé la meilleure performance de la saison pour l’équipe Saintéloc, tandis que Barnicoat a complété le top 5 sur la voiture qu’il partage avec Oliver Wilkinson.
Marciello s’est hissé à la sixième place après une série de dépassements, dont une brillante bataille avec son coéquipier Tereschenko. Le pilote russe s’est maintenu à la septième place et a remporté la Silver Cup, en repoussant son rival Ricardo Feller (Lamborghini n°14 Emil Frey Racing) grâce à une bonne performance dans le dernier tour. Jack Aitken est passé de la 10e à la 8e place lors du dernier tour en dépassant deux de ses coéquipiers, menant la #14 de Feller et la #163 pilotée par Siedler.
Barwell Motorsport a renoué avec la victoire dans la catégorie Pro-Am, permettant à Miguel Ramos et Henrique Chaves de revenir à un demi-point de la tête du championnat. La Lamborghini n°77 était en seconde position derrière le poleman Machiels, mais elle a pris la tête de la course lorsque le pilote belge est sorti et l’a gardée jusqu’à la fin de la course. Alex West et Jonny Adam (Aston Martin Garage 59 n°188) ont terminé à la deuxième place, tandis que le duo SPS Pierburg et Dominik Baumann a récupéré la dernière place sur le podium de la catégorie avec leur Mercedes-AMG n°20.
La sixième course de la saison de Sprint Cup sera disputée par 29 voitures, De Leener ayant été contraint de se retirer par précaution après l’accident survenu dans le premier tour.
La victoire d’aujourd’hui signifie que les champions en titre, Weerts et Vanthoor, entameront la seconde moitié de la campagne avec un écart de 16 points en tête du classement. Après avoir remporté quatre victoires lors des cinq courses précédentes à Misano, le duo du Team WRT aura à cœur de poursuivre sur cette lancée et d’accroître encore son avance dimanche après-midi.

The eventual margin of victory was only 1.1 seconds, though neither Weerts nor Vanthoor faced a serious challenge for the lead during the 60-minute contest. In contrast, the action behind was relentless from beginning to end, with several battles going down to the final lap.
Taking the start from pole, Weerts held the lead into turn 1 while Albert Costa (#163 Emil Frey Racing Lamborghini) muscled past Léo Roussel (#25 Saintéloc Racing Audi) to snatch second spot. Further back, Adrien de Leener ran wide and was launched skywards by the kerbs, causing race-ending damage to the #54 Dinamic Motorsport Porsche.
Costa posed the most serious threat to WRT during the opening stages, posting successive fast laps to close on to the rear of the #32 Audi, but he was unable to make a serious attempt for the lead. Roussel ran third, while Luca Stolz (#6 Mercedes-AMG Team Toksport WRT) had moved into fourth after making an excellent getaway from seventh on the grid.
The race was neutralised before the 10-minute mark after two of the leading Pro-Am contenders found themselves in the gravel, eliminating both Louis Machiels (#52 AF Corse Ferrari) and Valentin Pierburg (#20 SPS Automotive Performance Mercedes-AMG) from the battle for class victory.
Weerts judged the restart well and was already four tenths clear of Costa when racing resumed. The Audi driver did not have to defend on the first green flag lap, allowing him to edge away and build a one-second advantage before the pit window had opened.
There was action behind as Stolz muscled past Roussel to take third at turn 1, sending the Saintéloc Racing Audi off line and presenting Jim Pla (#87 AKKA ASP Mercedes-AMG) with an opportunity. Aurélien Panis had the ideal view of this battle from sixth position and was able to take full advantage, diving past both of his fellow Frenchman to assume fourth.
Emil Frey Racing’s challenge for victory was effectively ended in the pits. The #163 was slow to pull away after Norbert Siedler had taken the controls from Costa, losing 14 seconds and dropping the car back. Team WRT reacted quickly and swapped Weerts out for Vanthoor, who returned to the track with a commanding eight-second advantage over Maro Engel in the #6 Mercedes-AMG.
His lead was wiped out by a second safety car, which followed a collision that left #107 CMR Bentley and the #188 Garage 59 Aston Martin beached in separate gravel beds. But it was clear that Vanthoor had the pace to handle the restart and keep Engel at bay, meaning attention was focussed on the battle taking place behind.
Christopher Haase may have caused a few tense seconds in the Saintéloc Racing garage when he swooped around teammate Frédéric Vervisch, but both Audi Sport drivers judged their battle well and the #25 moved ahead of the #26 cleanly. Ben Barnicoat was on a charge in the #38 JOTA McLaren, passing the #87 Mercedes-AMG of Konstantin Tereschenko for fifth, while Raffaele Marciello (#88 AKKA ASP Mercedes-AMG) was on a charge having assumed the controls from Timur Boguslavskiy.
Vanthoor completed the job, taking the chequered flag from Engel and Haase, the latter securing a first podium of the 2021 campaign for Saintéloc Racing and a first in the series for crew-mate Roussel. Vervisch was fourth in the #26 Audi to wrap up a season-best showing from the Saintéloc squad, while Barnicoat completed the top-five in the car he shares with Oliver Wilkinson.
Marciello charged to sixth after a series of overtakes, including a brilliant battle with teammate Tereschenko. The Russian driver held on to seventh and took Silver Cup victory in the process, fending off class rival Ricardo Feller (#14 Emil Frey Racing Lamborghini) with a resilient final-lap performance. Jack Aitken jumped from 10th to eighth on the final tour by passing two of his teammates, leading home the #14 of Feller and the #163 driven by Siedler.
Barwell Motorsport returned to winning ways in the Pro-Am class, sending Miguel Ramos and Henrique Chaves to within half a point of the championship lead. The #77 Lamborghini ran second to pole-sitter Machiels early on, assuming the lead when the Belgian driver went off and staying there for the remainder of the race. Alex West and Jonny Adam (#188 Garage 59 Aston Martin) finished second, while SPS duo Pierburg and Dominik Baumann recovered to take the final place on the class podium with their #20 Mercedes-AMG.
There will be another full day of action tomorrow at Misano with qualifying at 09:00 and the weekend’s second contest at 14:00. A 29-car field will contest the sixth race of the Sprint Cup season after De Leener was forced to withdraw as a precaution following today’s opening-lap accident. All of the action will be streamed live across the series’ social media platforms and the GT World YouTube channel.
Today’s victory means that reigning champions Weerts and Vanthoor will begin the second half of the campaign with a 16-point cushion at the top of the standings. Having earned four wins from the previous five races at Misano, the Team WRT duo will be keen to continue this momentum and extend their advantage still further on Sunday afternoon.
