Des courses serrées, des duels passionnants et, finalement, le cinquième vainqueur en six courses : Marco Wittmann est arrivé en tête de la sixième course de la saison DTM à Zolder, en Belgique.
Le champion DTM 2014 et 2016 s’est imposé depuis la pole position, suivi de Maximilian Götz avec la Mercedes-AMG HRT et de Liam Lawson avec la Ferrari Red Bull. Pour Wittmann et BMW, c’est la première victoire de la saison, pour son équipe Walkenhorst, c’était même la toute première victoire en course DTM.
Avec sa victoire à Zolder, Wittmann fait également un grand pas au classement des pilotes dans lequel l’Allemand occupe désormais la quatrième place, juste devant le Thaïlandais Alex Albon (AlphaTauri Ferrari). Kelvin van der Linde (ABT Audi), qui a terminé huitième dimanche, reste en tête du classement. Avec 101 points, le Sud-Africain a 21 points d’avance sur Lawson, tandis que Götz est troisième avec 72 points.
Avant le week-end de course à Zolder, BMW n’était pas considéré comme l’un des favoris. Cela a rendu Wittmann encore plus heureux de sa victoire : « Pour être honnête, je n’arrive pas à y croire complètement. Deux ans depuis ma dernière victoire, cela semble trop long, vraiment. Nous n’avions pas de grandes attentes en venant ici, car on disait que la piste ne convenait pas à notre voiture. Cependant, nous avions un très bon package ».
Wittmann a fait un usage intelligent de sa première position sur la grille et a immédiatement pris la tête. Suite à une collision entre Philip Ellis (WINWARD Mercedes-AMG) et Vincent Abril (HRT Mercedes-AMG), après laquelle Abril n’a pas pu continuer, la voiture de sécurité a été déployée. Wittmann a également défendu son avance au restart, bien que Lucas Auer avec la Mercedes-AMG WINWARD l’ait mis sous pression. Pas de chance pour Auer : l’Autrichien a subi une pénalité de cinq secondes pour une infraction à l’arrêt au stand et n’a finalement terminé que cinquième.
Götz et Lawson, quant à eux, en ont profité pour monter sur le podium et se rapprocher de Kelvin van der Linde au classement des pilotes. « Nous sommes de nouveau en lice, nous sommes proches », se réjouit Götz. « Je ne m’y attendais pas vraiment, mais aujourd’hui, nous l’avons vraiment bien fait ». Lawson, lui aussi, a un œil sur le titre : « Je suis très heureux de ces points. Malheureusement, mon overcut n’a pas fonctionné, et je n’ai pas pu dépasser Marco et Maxi. »
Comme samedi, Esteban Muth a notamment provoqué de l’action dans le peloton. Avec la Lamborghini T3, le héros local belge a effectué de courageuses manœuvres de dépassement et s’est livré à de beaux duels, notamment avec le leader du championnat, van der Linde. Finalement, les efforts de Muth ont été récompensés par une neuvième place, mais Marco Wittmann a été le grand vainqueur.
Le prochain week-end de course du DTM est prévu du 20 au 22 août. Ensuite, la traditionnelle course du Nürburgring propulsée par Mercedes-AMG aura lieu, où les pilotes de classe mondiale se livreront certainement à une nouvelle course passionnante sur le circuit Sprint.

Fifth winner from six DTM races: Wittmann wins at Zolder

Zolder (8 August 2021). Close racing, thrilling duels and, eventually, the fifth race winner from six races: Marco Wittmann came out on top in the sixth race of the DTM season at Zolder in Belgium on Sunday. The 2014 and 2016 DTM champion won from pole position, followed by Maximilian Götz with the HRT Mercedes-AMG and Liam Lawson with the Red Bull Ferrari. For Wittmann and BMW, it is the first win of the season, for his team Walkenhorst, it was even the first-ever DTM race win.
With his victory at Zolder, Wittmann is also making a big step in the drivers’ standings in which the German is now in fourth place, just ahead of Thai Alex Albon (AlphaTauri Ferrari). Kelvin van der Linde (ABT Audi), who finished eighth on Sunday, remains in the lead of the standings. With 101 points, the South African is 21 points ahead of Lawson while Götz is third at 72 points.
Prior to the race weekend at Zolder, BMW wasn’t considered as one of the favourites. That made Wittmann even happier with his victory: “To be honest, I can’t fully believe it. Two years since my last win, that sounds like too long, really. We didn’t have any high expectations coming here as the track was said not to be suiting our car. However, we had a really good package.”
Wittmann made clever use of his first grid position and immediately took the lead. Following a collision between Philip Ellis (WINWARD Mercedes-AMG) and Vincent Abril (HRT Mercedes-AMG), after which Abril was unable to continue, the safety car was deployed. Wittmann also defended his lead at the restart, although Lucas Auer with the WINWARD Mercedes-AMG put him under pressure. Bad luck for Auer: the Austrian incurred a five-second time penalty for a pit stop infringement and eventually only ended up fifth.
Götz and Lawson, meanwhile, were the ones to benefit, not only finishing on the podium, but also were able to close up to Kelvin van der Linde in the drivers’ standings. “We are in contention again, we are close,” Götz delighted. “I didn’t quite expect it, but today, we did it really well.” Lawson, too, has an eye on the title: “I am very happy with the points. Unfortunately, my overcut didn’t work out, so I was unable to overtake Marco and Maxi.”
Like on Saturday, Esteban Muth in particular caused action in the field. With the T3 Lamborghini, the Belgian local hero put in some courageous overtaking manoeuvres and staged great duels, especially with points’ leader van der Linde. Eventually, Muth’s efforts were rewarded with ninth place, but Marco Wittmann was the big winner.
The next race weekend of the long-standing series is scheduled from 20-22 August. Then, the traditional race at the Nürburgring powered by Mercedes-AMG is on, where the world class drivers will certainly be staging exciting racing again at the short Sprint circuit.
